Notification of NAS Battery Fire and Apology

NGK INSULATORS, LTD . wishes to report that at around 7:20 a.m. on September 21 NGK-manufactured NAS (sodium-sulfur) batteries used for storing electricity (rated capacity of 2,000 kilowatts) caught on fire. The batteries are owned by The Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and installed at the Tsukuba Plant (Joso City, Ibaraki Prefecture) of Mitsubishi Materials Corporation (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).

NGK deeply regrets any worry or inconvenience to customers, local authorities and residents.

At present, the fire has been subdued, but work is continuing to extinguish the fire under the supervision of the local fire department.

On September 21, NGK formed an Accident Investigation Committee (chaired by Takeyuki Mizuno, Director and Senior Vice President). With the cooperation of interested parties, this Committee is looking into the cause of the fire and measures to prevent a reoccurrence.
