NGK to Bolster Production Capacity for Ceramic Products for Diesel Automotive Exhaust Gas Purifiers. Decision to Construct a Second Plant for NGK CERAMICS POLSKA.

March 11, 2015

NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (President Taku Oshima; Headquarters: Nagoya, Japan) announced today that it has decided to construct a new, second plant for its Polish subsidiary, NGK CERAMICS POLSKA SP. Z O.O (Gliwice, Silesia Province, Poland) to keep up with increasing demand for ceramic products for diesel automotive exhaust gas purifiers. The new plant is scheduled to commence production in January 2017, and is to enhance NGK's production capacity for silicon carbide (SiC) diesel particulate filters (DPFs) by approximately 30%.

NGK CERAMICS POLSKA is the NGK Group's only production plant for SiC DPFs. Since the start of production in 2004, capacity has been ramped up in stages to meet growing demand in the main market of Europe. Faced with the forecast for even further demand growth in the future and a lack of space for further expansion of the existing facility, NGK decided to construct a second plant in Poland to bolster production capacity.

The second plant will be constructed at the Tucznawa Industrial Park (Dabrowa Górnicza, Silesia Province). It will require a capital investment of approximately 17.0 billion yen, and will bolster the production capacity of SiC DPFs by around 30% from the present total including the existing production base. Construction work will commence in August 2015, with production scheduled to start from January 2017.

Demand for ceramics used in exhaust gas purification is growing strongly, driven by global tightening of exhaust gas regulations and an increase in automobile sales volume, particularly in emerging countries. Amid these, in Europe increasing passenger vehicle sales following the economic recovery and an increase in the ratio of diesel engine vehicles are among the factors expected to drive further demand for SiC DPFs, which offer high thermal tolerance and can cope with tough usage conditions.
