High-response CO2 sensor suitable for high-temperature and high-humidity environments

Overview of products under development

CO2 sensor
CO2 sensor

NGK INSULATORS is currently developing a compact CO2 sensor capable of measuring CO2 and H2O concentrations in exhaust gases from vehicles and industrial plants. Leveraging ceramic technologies cultivated through the development of automotive NOx sensors, this sensor enables real-time, high-precision CO2 measurements, even in high-temperature and high-humidity environments.

By enabling CO2 monitoring in various applications such as vehicles and manufacturing processes, this sensor will contribute to CCS (Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage) and CCU (Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilization) initiatives.

Features of the CO2 sensor

Simultaneous High-Precision Measurements of CO2 and H2O

The sensor enables accurate simultaneous measurements of CO2 and H2O concentrations free of any cross-interference between the gases. Unlike many conventional gas analyzers, it performs reliably even in gas environments that contain water vapor, eliminating the need for dehumidification or other pretreatment processes.

Effective Emissions Monitoring in Harsh High-Temperature, High-Humidity Environments

Thanks to its ceramic construction, the sensor offers excellent resistance to vibration and corrosion, making it ideal for use in extreme conditions—from sub-zero temperatures to high-temperature combustion exhaust. Compared to conventional optical analyzers, it enables direct, rapid measurement.
This capability supports real-time feedback control in industrial plants and allows effective monitoring of gas emissions in manufacturing facilities.

Developing CO2 Sensors to Contribute to a Carbon-Neutral Society

The NGK Group is actively developing and providing products and services that support the realization of a carbon-neutral (CN) society. As part of these efforts, we’re developing CO2 sensors that allow accurate monitoring and management of carbon dioxide emissions.
By applying these sensors to various CCS (Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage) and CCU (Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilization) processes, we’re making it possible to visualize greenhouse gas emissions, thereby helping to optimize manufacturing processes and emissions reductions.

Target Applications

  • Measurement of CO2 in combustion exhaust gases
  • Monitoring CO2 capture volumes for CO2 capture systems
